What a Decade in Government Comms Taught Us, and Why We Built CivAll

How a decade serving government communicators led Social News Desk to build CivAll, a civic engagement platform designed around the way your team actually works.

If you’ve worked in government communications over the last several years, there’s a good chance you’ve used Social News Desk. And if you have, you already know what we’re about: social media tools that actually work, U.S.-based human support, and a team that understands the pressure you’re under. That track record doesn’t go away. And for government teams, it now has a dedicated name: CivAll.

Social News Desk continues serving news customers as it always has.

Introducing CivAll by Social News Desk: one platform for civic engagement, built specifically for local government.

Why now? Here’s our story:

Social News Desk spent 15 years building communications software, starting with local news. We got very good at it. Along the way, government communicators started showing up, because it turns out PIOs and newsrooms have more in common than you’d think. Both are managing breaking news. Both are publishing to multiple channels under pressure. Both operate in high-pressure, highly visible environments.

So we leaned in. Over the past years serving the public sector, and building CivAll specifically, we went deeper than ever. Talking to PIOs, city clerks, IT directors, city managers, and special district administrators. Watching how government teams actually work. And we kept hearing the same thing, in different words, from different people.

"I'm copying the same post into multiple different platforms."
"Our website, social media tool, and archiving system have nothing to do with each other."
"A records request for social media posts takes me two days to pull together."

We didn’t hear about a software problem. We heard about a structural problem. The tools available to local government weren’t designed for local government. They were assembled over decades through acquisitions, vendor by vendor, product by product, stitched into something that looks like a platform from the outside but feels like a patchwork from the inside. Different logins. Different support queues. Data that lives in silos and never talks to each other.

Once you see that clearly, there’s only one honest response: build something better, from the ground up.

What CivAll actually is

CivAll is a civic engagement platform built specifically for local government. Website, social media management, and compliance archiving, built as one platform, one login, one support team.

One platform, not a patchwork.

That’s the difference between a platform designed as one system from day one, and one assembled from several. When your tools share a data model, your workflows actually make sense. This is what years of watching government teams work looks like. We built CivAll around your workflows, not the other way around.

What makes CivAll different

The government technology space has no shortage of vendors who’ve been around a long time. Most of them got big by acquiring other companies, and you can feel it every time you log into one of their products and realize it looks nothing like the last one, because it used to be a different company.

CivAll got here by paying attention. By listening to government communicators, both the customers on SND today and the prospects we’ve talked with along the way. By delivering implementations in a few weeks when the industry standard stretches to six months or longer. By backing the platform with SOC 2 Type II certification and keeping support 100% U.S.-based, because when a water main breaks at 3 AM, the last thing you need is a ticket queue.

What this means for you

If you’re an existing SND government customer: nothing about your current experience breaks. Your team, your customer support contact, your data, all of it carries forward. Your Customer Success Manager can walk you through what’s new with CivAll and how it could fit your team, on a timeline that works for you.

If you have questions, reach out to your Customer Success Manager directly. They’re already up to speed.

If you’re exploring options for your local government, municipality or state agency: you’re arriving at the right moment. CivAll is purpose-built for teams like yours, with the credibility of 15 years and 2,000+ organizations behind it, and the focus that comes from building specifically for local government. You can see it for yourself at civall.com/demo.

One platform. One login. Built for the work you do every day. Your community counts on clear, timely communication, and your team needs a platform built to deliver it.
